HONEYWELL EARNS ATEX CERTIFICATION FOR CORROSION TRANSMITTERS

Approvals Provide European Industry with New Tools to Fight Corrosion

BRUSSELS, Nov. 13, 2006 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that its SmartCET® Corrosion Transmitters have obtained ATEX certification, a directive that outlines standards for instrumentation used in and around potentially explosive atmospheres in the European Union. With this certification, SmartCET – which has gained strong user acceptance and industry accolades in North America for its corrosion monitoring benefits – is now available for more wide-ranging applications in European countries.

“SmartCET is designed to reduce the financial burden that corrosion-related problems bring to the process industries,” said Russell Kane, director of corrosion services, Honeywell Process Solutions. “Localized corrosion, for instance, is responsible for approximately 70 to 90 percent of corrosion-related equipment failures.

“By having access to current and actionable process variable information, operators can transform raw corrosion-monitoring data into high-value process knowledge that will help them make critical business decisions quickly, and optimize plant performance.”

Integrated with the Honeywell Experion® Process Knowledge System (PKS), SmartCET provides online, real-time data that measures the corrosion rate in millimeters per year (mmpy) and detects the presence of localized (pitting) corrosion conditions. Other SmartCET parameters can be used for further online corrosion diagnostic analysis and for improved accuracy of corrosion rate data. As a result, plants experience several benefits, including:

  • Increased plant uptime due to improved asset reliability
  • Reduced maintenance costs by moving from scheduled to reliability-centered maintenance
  • Maximized production throughput
  • Improved safety and the minimization of process upsets and excursions

SmartCET corrosion transmitters are available in three configurations:

  • Multivariable output with four real-time corrosion measurements
  • Single variable with output for general corrosion rate
  • Single variable with output for Pitting Factor

Experion is Honeywell’s proven automation and control system that unifies people with process, business and asset management information to help process manufacturers improve profitability and productivity.

Besides SmartCET corrosion transmitters, Honeywell provides expert corrosion services including Corrosion Testing and Modeling and a comprehensive set of software tools that facilitate effective decision making in the fields of corrosion and materials. Additionally, Honeywell’s Joint Industry Programs, which are open to participation by any process company, provide specialized corrosion engineering and research services dedicated to the investigation of common industrial corrosion problems.
