Experion, Safety Manager and Uniformance Implemented At New Kotkan Energia Plant
KUOPIO, Finland, August 7, 2007 – Honeywell (NYSE:HON) announced it will supply a new-generation bio-waste incineration power plant in Finland with a range of automation and safety solutions. The new Kotka-based facility, operated by Kotkan Energia Oy, uses municipal and industrial bio-waste to supply heat and energy to the surrounding community and will serve as a model for future bio-energy plants in the region.
The project, which began in April 2007 and is expected to be completed in October 2008, includes the installation of Honeywell’s Experion® Process Knowledge System (PKS) to control waste incineration. This is a critical function because the quality of the municipal and industrial waste used to power the Kotka plant varies dramatically, yet the burning process must remain steady and consistent. Honeywell’s Safety Manager will be used to manage safety in accordance with strict government regulations and the Uniformance® Process History Database will be used for data collection and reporting. This new-generation power plant is subject to environmental, safety and reporting regulations determined by the European Union and other respective authorities. Collectively, the Honeywell systems will enable Kotkan Energia to calculate, monitor and report on the plant’s emissions and efficiency to fulfill these requirements. In addition to supplying the systems, Honeywell will manage the application planning and commissioning of the plant and provide comprehensive service and support.
“We looked at a number of vendors but awarded the contract to Honeywell because it can provide the ideal blend of process control, security and reporting capabilities,” said Vesa Pirtilä, managing director, Kotkan Energia. “Another factor was the company’s strong local presence, which will provide year-round support to ensure the smooth running of the plant.”
“This is an important and timely project for the Nordic region,” said Timo Saarelainen, managing director, Honeywell Finland. “Bio-energy will become far more widely used in the coming years as natural resources become scarce. We are confident that with our technology and experience we will enable Kotkan Energia to run an efficient and profitable plant that will serve as a blueprint for similar projects in the region and around the world.”
