QCS CD Actuators
CD actuators are situated across the machine and apply furnish, steam, water, heat and coating to the moving paper web in order to reduce the CD variation in paper properties. This improves the paper quality, increases machine runnability, reduces raw material usage and increases production.

Actuator Interfaces
Specialized network interface for CD control systems that facilitates peer-to-peer, online communication among intelligent actuators.
CD Caliper Actuators
The CD caliper actuators use either hot air, or induction heating technology to improve CD caliper profiles by heating the roll surface in individually controlled, narrow zones to adjust calender nip loading. Heating the roll surface also provides enhanced printability and the potential for improved sheet strength. They include CalTrol and Calcoil.
CD Coat Weight Actuators
The ProCoat provides an integrated CD control solution for on-machine and off-machine blade and rod coating operations by selectively changing the CD coating application to level the coat weight profile. It will reduce coating use, startup time and rejects, and has been shown to extend coater blade life.
CD Gloss Actuators
CD Gloss and / or Smoothness can be controlled by a number of devices. Calcoil induction heating systems are used to raise roll surface temperatures with 75 mm (3”) wide control zones; expansion of the roll from the temperature can be used to control caliper while the roll temperature itself has an influence on the paper surface gloss or smoothness. Advanced multivariable control allows us to simultaneously deal with the complex interactions between these variables. For uncoated grades, Calendizer is an actuator that goes just before the calender stack to apply steam to the surface of the sheet, and can be used to adjust smoothness and curl of the paper. Calendizer is not recommended for coated grades. Legacy products include GlossTrol, another type of steam actuator.
CDWeb Manager
The CDWeb Manager is part of an intelligent Honeywell CD actuator system using CDWeb technology. CDWeb actuators receive digital setpoints from the host QCS via serial communications and take care of all actuator movement and diagnostics internally. The CDWeb Manager is normally a separate enclosure, and acts as a protocol translator to the QCS (Honeywell or foreign), supporting network communications (ODX, OPC) or serial links (RTU Modbus). When required, CDWeb managers also provide digital interlocks for the actuators with PLC functionality. CDWeb actuators include AutoSlice CDW, ProCoat, ProFlow, IDP interface for Devronizers and Calendizers, Aqualizer, and Calcoil CW. Legacy actuators with CDWeb include AutoSlice, ProSlice. CDWeb Managers have used a variety of computers and PLC’s over the years so site-specific documentation should be consulted for details.
CD Weight Actuators
CD basis weight can be controlled by automating the slice lip or by using dilution control. The narrowly spaced, intelligent actuators provide the tightest CD control on either conventional or dilution profiling headboxes. Weight actuators include AutoSlice or ProFlow.
