The Process Interface Unit (PIU) added to the capabilities of Honeywell’s TDC systems by providing additional I/O and SOE functionality. The capability of remote-mounted I/O in field-hardened enclosures was also provided. The PIU family consists of two rack mount I/O devices—the High Level PIU, the Low Level PIU, and the field mounted I/O version, the Low Energy PIU. These devices have provided the function of data acquisition in thousands of locations around the world. However, control system needs change, process improvements are ongoing, and there comes a time when it makes economic sense to replace an existing control system with something new and improved.
Today, Experion™ Process Knowledge System (PKS) controllers deliver control functionality far beyond what was originally provided in TDC 2000. Experion is a next-generation process automation system that unifies people with process, business and asset management to help you increase profitability and productivity.
Experion control capabilities allow you to combine both PIU and TDC controller I/O into one improved control scheme. To facilitate your migration to Experion, two key functions are required. First, existing field signals must be easily and quickly moved to the new control system. Existing control schemes must also be migrated (and preferably improved) when implementing the new control system.
To address our customers’ migration needs, Honeywell provides two advanced solutions—Signal Match and Control Match—that help you match your old system functionality to Experion. Signal Match is a suite of hardware assemblies (see photo) and project services that enable the I/O connections of your existing TDC 2000 vintage control system to be simply and easily transferred over so that you can enjoy the many benefits of Experion. Control Match is a suite of services and tools that can translate your existing control algorithms and schemes to Experion, and allow you to take advantage of its many new capabilities. Together, these solutions not only enhance your control system’s performance, but also improve your ability to make informed business decisions.
