RPMS: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is RPMS?
A: Honeywell’s Refinery and Petrochemical Modeling System (RPMS) is an industry-leading modeling system that helps model every situation within plant operations—from simple to the most complex.

Q: What type of optimizer does RPMS employ?
A: RPMS employs the state-of-the-art optimizer Xpress, from Dash Optimization. This best-in-class optimizer provides the technology necessary to quickly manipulate and solve the most difficult LP problems.

Q: What is multi-plant modeling?
A: The RPMS multi-plant module generates mathematical models for the solution to the supply and distribution allocation problem. This module can incorporate sub-models of operating plants, generated through RPMS, to include the full flexibility of detailed plant operation.

Q:  What is multi-period modeling?
A: An invaluable tool for annual operating plan development and strategic planning, the RPMS multi-period processor supports modeling across multiple time periods, with the length of time periods varied by the user. This option is valuable in a number of applications, including inventory management, analysis of discounted cash flows across time, and inclusion of varying processing capacity at intervals within an overall operating plan.

Q: What type of Refining Process Database does RPMS provide?
A: RPMS offers a dynamic refining database that provides a comprehensive selection of process unit sub-models and investment-capacity relationships for most commercially available processes in use by the world refining industry. The database contains sub-models for both volume- and weight-based process units, giving the user complete flexibility in customizing refinery models, middle distillates, and fuel oils and quality data for most intermediate refinery streams.

Q: What is the RPMS Data Factory?
A: The RPMS Data Factory is an integrated Microsoft® Excel application for displaying and manipulating RPMS model data using Excel worksheets. The usual spreadsheet facilities are available for adding and/or deleting rows and/or columns, performing calculations, copying and/or pasting between worksheets, changing appearance, and printing.
