ASM Graphics: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does Honeywell deliver ASM Graphics for the user’s site?
A: There are three levels of ASM Graphics that Honeywell can provide to your site. Level 1 assures that display contents, style of presentation and navigation techniques are consistent with ASM Guidelines. Level 2 adds display hierarchies and associated navigation techniques to the Level 1 capabilities. Level 3 includes conducting a task analysis to derive the information contents for your site based on a set of scenarios targeted at the most critical responses to abnormalities that the operator will face. A Honeywell specialist will work with your team to identify the appropriate level of support for your site. The specialist will then lead the effort to define the requirements for the graphics displays consistent with the level of support selected with your site, and will lead the development of all displays. Appropriate training will also be defined. As an option, Honeywell can develop and deliver that training.

Q: How do you obtain a copy of the ASM Operator Display Guidelines?
A: Companies belonging to the ASM Consortium should contact an ASM representative or download the guidelines from the members’ section at www.ASMConsortium.com. If a company is not a member of the ASM Consortium, the guidelines are not available. Honeywell can use those guidelines to develop a solution for the user’s site.

Q: There has been a resistance to the gray scale display that is part of the ASM Graphics. Is there a solution to this problem?
A: The ASM Graphics concepts do not use the latest features available on personal computers. The reason for the gray scale is to make it easy to recognize when there is a problem because that is the only color that can be seen. Of course, there are many other elements of ASM graphics that are also beneficial.

Q: How does AEA collect the data?
A: AEA collects the data from the History Module or the Event Journal Collector for TotalPlant Solution (TPS), and from the Experion PKS Alarm and Event database. Third-party collection can be added in varying ways depending on the capability of the control system.
