Mobile Station: Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do users implement a Mobile Station on their system?
A. Implement Mobile Station through three different solutions:

  • Mobile Access for eServer Standard
  • Mobile Access for eServer Premium
  • Mobile Access for Station.

The Mobile Access for eServer Premium and Mobile Access for Station using Terminal Services solutions use a networked Mobile Station Server. A Mobile Station Server can support both solutions simultaneously. The Mobile Station Server "serves" out eServer Premium and Experion Station—Flex connections to handheld devices in the field.

Q. Can the user view and acknowledge alarms from a Mobile Station?
A. Yes, the user can—if using Mobile Access for Station, whether directly connected or through Terminal Services. It uses the Experion security model so that data access can be controlled on a per-user basis.

Q. Can the user connect to multiple Experion systems?
A. Yes, using Honeywell’s Distributed System Architecture, a Mobile Station can access data from several systems.

Q. When connecting a Mobile Station directly to an Experion Server (i.e., not using eServer or Terminal Services), does the user need to buy a Station license?
A. A Mobile Station is licensed as any other connected station. You can use a rotary license or obtain a specific license for that station.

Q. Is there a specific 802.11x wireless infrastructure protocol required (i.e., does it have to be 802.11b or g)?
A. Mobile Station does not require a specific 802.11 wireless protocol. This depends upon what hardware you choose and what that wireless card supports.

Q. What hardware can be used with the Mobile Station?
A. The station hardware you use depends upon which solution you require.  Any handheld device that connects directly to the server as an operator station needs to meet the requirements for a Flex Station. However, if you are using Terminal Services or eServer, then the device simply needs to be able to run those applications required. Honeywell recommends Xplore Technologies’ industrial tablet PCs, iX104, which are Class 1 Division II / ATEX Zone 2 certified and can be used in hazardous environments.

Q. Can Honeywell sell wireless infrastructure (e.g., access points)?
A. Honeywell’s OneWireless network is a wireless mesh network designed for industrial environments. OneWireless access points, called Multinodes, are certified to be used in hazardous industrial environments. These multi-standard, multi-protocol access points are capable of communicating with IEEE802.11 devices as well as ISA100 ready XYR6000 transmitters. Honeywell’s certified wireless network engineers can help your site design and implement a wireless infrastructure that will meet your requirements.

Q.  What other mobility solutions does Honeywell offer?
A.Honeywell also offers IntelaTrac PKS to automate the collection of field data. IntelaTrac®  PKS combines wireless handheld computers, software, and RFID technology for automating field data collection, improving data integrity, and managing assets intelligently. IntelaTrac PKS is integrated with Honeywell’s Asset Manager system. In addition, Honeywell’s DocuMint® solution supports proactive maintenance procedures and document maintenance activities from a wireless handheld device. The application can easily be customized to perform any automated inspection route, including testing and calibration.
