Maxon Improves Product Development with Honeywell Corrosion Services
Benefits

Given current trends in the fuel economy, providing substantiated confidence in improved products to meet increasingly harsh operating conditions is key to Maxon Corporation’s future growth and success.

With a focus on next generation product improvement, Maxon utilized Honeywell’s corrosion services during its evaluation of improved materials selection for a key product, safety shut-off valves.

Maxon experienced the following benefits as a result of Honeywell’s corrosion technology:

  • Confidence in the improved product to meet increasingly harsh operating conditions and reduce downtime costs

  • Improved product development expected to increase Maxon current market position by 3-5 percent

  • Found best balance between efficiency and product quality
Background

Challenges

As a leader in industrial combustion equipment, Maxon knew that in order to maintain its competitive advantage and offer improved service to its customers it must continue to identify ways to stay ahead of the technology curve.

According to Maxon’s Senior Product Engineer, Lora L. Davis, "Maxon recognizes that now, more than ever, our customers face significant challenges in optimizing performance of their combustion equipment. As fuel prices increase, it is prudent to consider the cost benefits of burning the more competitively priced, lower quality fuels. However, the so-called efficiency improvement can be dramatically impacted by faster materials degradation in the combustion equipment."

Maxon investigated ways to find the best balance between efficiency and product quality by migrating its technology to next-generation systems and looked for a partner to help define its path.

Solution

Maxon engaged Honeywell during its evaluation of improved materials selection for safety shut-off valves.

"Our first encounter with Honeywell’s corrosion services team came through corrosion training at our facility. Education of our employees is a key aspect of our commitment to customer service, and helps us to better appreciate and address product development needs," said Davis.

In order to evaluate a range of potential metallic and non-metallic materials for safety shut-off valve trims, Maxon contracted Honeywell to perform a series of tests covering a range of harsh chemical environments at elevated temperatures. Assessments of NACE and non-NACE compliant materials were performed. Selected materials were exposed during 30-day tests to hydrogen sulfide-containing environments at elevated temperatures and pressures. Post-exposure visual examinations and weight loss data were reported, and served as a basis for decisions on further testing.

Concluded Davis, "We look forward to the future and with Honeywell’s help will continue to perform additional testing to enable a safety margin for new applications. This type of out-of-the-box thinking is what has made us a true industry leader in a challenging and highly competitive industry."

In addition to corrosion testing and consulting services, Honeywell also offers corrosion prediction applications and SmartCET transmitters. Interfacing real-time corrosion measurement with process information provides insights into the true economic impact of corrosion and methods to achieve improved process control and efficiency.
