“We tested other vendors and Honeywell surpasses them all. Honeywell’s service and support over the past 15 years has been tremendous due to the training they give their people. Honeywell products have also proven to be dependable with little disruption over a 15-year period, proving the workmanship in the product.”
Gerald Bru, Senior Control Systems Specialist, Lyondell
Lyondell Chemical Company wanted to provide field operators at its Texas olefins plant with the most updated information to efficiently track and integrate valuable field data. Having an existing relationship with Honeywell for its distributed control system (DCS), Lyondell once again turned to Honeywell to implement a system to track and implement field data into its DCS, providing operators with the information to make smart, proactive business decisions. Relying on Honeywell’s IntelaTrac* PKS, an integrated software and mobile hardware solution for field data collection and intelligent asset management, Lyondell is able to realize the following benefits:
Lyondell Chemical Company is one of the world’s largest chemical companies, with approximately $18 billion in assets. Lyondell is a global manufacturer of basic chemicals and derivatives, including ethylene, propylene, propylene oxide, titanium dioxide, styrene, polyethylene and acetyls. It also is a refiner of heavy, high-sulfur crude oil and a significant producer of gasoline-blending components.
With headquarters in Houston, Texas, Lyondell operates on five continents and employs approximately 11,000 people worldwide. Pro forma combined 2005 revenues were $24 billion.
In 2004, Lyondell wanted to find a way to capture, track and integrate field data with data from other sources for intelligent asset management. The company’s desire was to upgrade its Corpus Christi, Texas olefins plant and leverage new technologies to achieve this goal.
Lyondell defined various project goals in looking for an appropriate solution including:
We needed an integrated solution of both hardware and software products to help arm our field personnel with the right mobilized equipment to ensure accurate collection and analysis of data,” said Gerald Bru, Senior Control Systems Specialist, Lyondell.
Lyondell has been a Honeywell customer for several years and has a Honeywell DCS that it has relied on for the past 15 years. “Although we did our diligence and tested other vendors, we were more satisfied with Honeywell, who once again surpassed our expectations,” said Bru.
Lyondell implemented Honeywell’s IntelaTrac PKS system for field data collection and intelligent asset management, enabling its users to integrate field data with data from multiple sources, including production, process control and work management systems. Field operators were armed with tools for the accurate capture, collection and use of time-critical data through the use of ruggedized computers, RFID tags and other peripheral devices, such as temperature guns, vibration probes and NDT testing devices.
“It is evident that we chose the right solution provider based on the excellent workmanship and service and support they provide,” continued Bru. “We’ve been able to outfit our field personnel with the capabilities of an advanced mobile system that enables them to perform their jobs onsite with accurate data, saving both time and money, but nothing demonstrates dedication like picking up the phone at 2 a.m. for a field call and Honeywell is right by your side.”
Lyondell uses IntelaTrac PKS web-based exception reports to allow experts to analyze, identify and rectify bad actors.
