Honeywell Customer St. Mary's Paper Also Recognized for Technology Update That Boosted Production of High-Value Paper
PHOENIX, Sept. 08, 2004 - Honeywell (NYSE:HON) announced today that long-time customer St. Mary's Paper Ltd. of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, has won START magazine's Technology and Business Award, a prestigious honor which recognizes companies for excellence in manufacturing. For its contributions to St. Mary's success, Honeywell has been recognized with a START Technology and Business Enabler Award.
"The Technology and Business awards are all about using innovative, leading-edge technology to overcome business challenges and the relationship between St. Mary's and Honeywell has yielded this kind of success," said Peggy Smedley, editorial director for START.
An independent panel of industry experts from AMR Research, ARC, Gartner, Forrester and Daratech selected this year's Technology and Business Award winners. Honeywell, St. Mary's and other winners were recognized August 18 at a ceremony aboard the Odyssey Cruise Ship in Chicago.
"With St. Mary's commitment to improved production and Honeywell's technology, we created a new profit center for this 100-year-old paper mill," said Jack Bolick, president and CEO of Honeywell Process Solutions. "We're pleased to have our joint efforts recognized with these prestigious awards."
St. Mary's Paper produces more than 240,000 metric tons of paper each year. Faced with growing market demand for supercalendared paper - a mineral-filled, mechanical pulp paper with exceptional smoothness, opacity, brightness and strength - St. Mary's worked with Honeywell to upgrade its machines to meet these quality requirements. The key to its success, according to Paper Machine Superintendent, Dave Dube, was the implementation of Honeywell's Performance CDMultivariable controller, a state-of-the-art, large-scale, model predictive controller for paper machines.
"The paper machines we upgraded are both over 50 years old and are excellent examples of how aging equipment can be optimized to meet current and future market requirements, and Honeywell has been a big part of this optimization," Dube said. "Customers have commented to us that this 'new paper' has better print smoothness and less show-through."
This is the second year that START magazine has recognized Honeywell with a Technology & Business Award. In 2003, Honeywell received a Technology and Business Vision Award for its Experion™ Process Knowledge System™ (PKS), a next-generation business, process and asset management system. START also recognized Honeywell with the START Hot Company Award in 2003 and 2004.
