Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) plants are those in which steam production in the gasification system is integrated with that in the combined cycle portion of the system. IGCC systems combine the high efficiency and low emissions of gas turbines with the ability to run on syngas, which is coal-derived, or other low-cost solid or heavy liquid fuels. In IGCC plants, coal is not burned directly, but rather is processed with oxygen and water in a high pressure gasifier to form a synthesis gas. The clean syngas is then combusted in a gas turbine generator, which generates most of the electricity the plant produces. The waste heat is recovered and used to produce steam that drives a smaller steam turbine generator in a combined cycle configuration to produce additional electricity.
