Combined Cycle Control: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is included in the Combined Cycle Control solution?
A. The CC solution includes the control and monitoring of all combustion turbine (CT), steam turbine (ST), and heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) units. It is part of Honeywell’s Experion system.

Q: What displays are included in the operator interface?
A. Detail displays are automatically built for each control and monitoring point in the system, and can be either designed for individual and group displays. Standard group displays have up to eight individual points per display, and can include trending functions. The major graphics displays include:

  • Combustion Turbine: Inlet, exhaust, combustion, lubrication, gears, generator, and bearings.
  • HRSG: Heaters and steam
  • Steam Turbine: Governor, gears, bearings, condenser, lubrication, generator, and steam.
  • BOP: Cooling, air, electrical, service water, and instrumentation.

Q: What performance calculations are offered?
A. Reports on the equipment and unit performance are provided with the optional TotalPlant Performance Monitor (TPPM). Calculations are performed periodically and are available on operating displays, web pages, and in print. They include:

  • Heat rate and efficiency on each combustion turbine
  • Efficiency on each HRSG
  • Heat rate and efficiency on steam turbine
  • Condensor performance
  • Unit heat rate and efficiency

Q: Does this solution work with other distributed control systems?
A: Yes. The software components support open control platforms and communication protocols, and can be interfaced to several third-party DCSs.

Q: What other options are offered in conjunction with the CC solution?
A. The CC solution can be expanded to include other plant systems and is designed to allow these components to be easily added as desired. They include:

  • Auxiliary firing to offer control for duct burner management.
  • Multiple fuel handling systems for auxiliary burners.
  • Demineralizer controllers and/or software.
  • Continuous temperature control to optimize unit start up and operation, and to reduce thermal stresses.
  • Supervisory sequences for unit-wide sequencing for CT, HRSG, ST, and BP systems.
