Aromatics Remote Performance Management: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What process technologies does RPM support?
A: RPM currently supports Aromatics, including:

  • BTX
  • Sulfolane
  • Parex
  • Isomar
  • Tatoray

In addition, RPM supports:

  • Naphtha Complex
  • Fired heaters
  • Utility Systems

Q: Where can customers find more information about RPM?
A: To learn more about how Remote Performance Management can improve your plant’s performance, contact your Honeywell account manager or call us at

1-800-822-7673 (US only) or 602-313-3985 (Global). Or visit our web site at www.honeywell.com/ps. Also, you can contact your UOP account manager or call 1-847-391-2000. Or visit the UOP web site at www.uop.com

Q: What ports must be opened on the corporate firewall to use Scout Express?
A: None other than the standard browsing capabilities. The Scout Express Shuttle only uses a simple browse for all interactions, utilizing the normal browse port (80 usually) or the SSL port (443 usually). SE Shuttle will use the browser settings of the PC in which it is installed, so if the corporate standard has changed the browse port to 82 or 135, SE Shuttle picks this up and uses these settings.

Q: Do you need to open any other access from the web?
A: No, the Scout Express Server is passive. All connections are client initiated from the customer side by the Scout Express Shuttle, which can run as a normal application, a scheduled application, or a service. At any time, SE Shuttle can be disabled to block all communication to and from the Scout Express Server.

Q: Do you need to open any access to your Process Control Network?
A: Probably not. One of the main issues in PCN design is to serve the correct data to those who need it at the business level, while restricting access where it is not required. One of the best examples of this is a Process Historian. Historians require some access to bring data from the PCN to the business layer or Process Information Network (PIN). Usually this is by means of low-level TCP/IP communications through one or more TCP/IP ports.

The Scout Express Port (SE Port) provides the link between the PCN and the PIN, and leverages the above concept in a new way:

  • Directly re-uses network communication component from Honeywell’s Historian: PHD.
  • Only requires one TCP/IP port be open from the PCN to the PIN (low level TPC/IP communications).
  • Will only accept transmissions from another instance of SE Port (can be IP  limited with fixed IP machines).
  • Will only transfer files (any other connect request will be rejected).
  • Browsing and internet access can be completely shut off at the PCN level.

Q: Why not just use e-mail?
in a “Voice of the Customer” study in 1999, data integrity and security of the Process Control network are central to any industrial facility. Companies that are very sensitive about data have come up with standard architectures to deal with security for the Process Control network. SE Port can be used to satisfy all of these scenarios without worry of any additional access being given.

Of course, e-mail is always an acceptable method. Once the data is collected, simply send it as an attachment to loopscout@honeywell.com

On the other hand, the Loop Scout team has put much effort into looking at the time and effort required to evaluate, monitor, and maintain a Loop Management program, and each time you have to take a manual step—such as sending an

e-mail—this is time taken away from fixing a financially impactful problem. That is why we have designed these components to make the data collection and monitoring as simple and as easy as possible.

Q: Is my data safe during transport?
A: Yes. The method of transfer we have dubbed “Scout Express” will only transfer files of a fixed “Scout” format—which is compressed and encrypted, and protected with a public/private key for added protection. No data is sent in a recognizable form.
