Turbomachinery Monitoring: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does Turbo Suite link to Asset Manager?
A: Turbo Suite is an example of a Smart Scout and links to Asset Manager in a similar way to Data Scout.

Q: What is Data Scout?
A: Data Scout is a tool integrated with Asset Manager that enables users to access data via OLE for Process Control (OPC) from any OPC data source. Data is then tested and symptoms are generated for Asset Manager. This allows users to take full advantage of third-party systems such as Bentley Nevada Vibration Monitoring package.

Q: Can users create custom fault models?
A: Yes. Data Scout can monitor any process data on Experion, PHD or third-party OPC data sources. Operators such as greater/less than X by Y, inside /outside X, and rate of change allow rules to be applied to detect a symptom that is occurring. Symptoms can be combined into fault models that indicate a problem with a piece of equipment.

Q: What are the auto population capabilities of Asset Manager?
A: All Experion hardware and its hierarchy are automatically created in the Asset Manager. FOUNDATION fieldbus, HART and Digitally Enhanced (DE) field devices are also automatically created in Asset Manager. The system automatically creates a link to Knowledge Builder, and fault models and diagnostic capabilities are created for all assets.

Q: How is performance monitoring different from condition monitoring?
A: Condition monitoring typically refers to the physical health of the equipment (e.g., vibration monitoring), whereas performance monitoring looks at the thermodynamic health of the equipment (e.g., efficiency, power output, etc.) to determine equipment problems.

Q: How long does a turbo-machinery monitoring project take to complete?
A: A project for a single compressor driven by a steam turbine requires approximately 8-10 weeks from receipt of order to final commissioning and testing.

Q: What maintenance is required for a Turbo Suite system?
A: Normally, the only maintenance required is to ensure that the process measurements are available and accurate. No other maintenance is required, unless the internals of the gas turbine or other equipment is modified (i.e., if remapping occurs). In such a case, Honeywell can update the performance map information. 

Q: Where has Turbo Suite technology been applied?
A: The Turbo Suite calculation software has been applied worldwide to more than 50 gas turbines, 20 steam turbines, 70 compressors, and 10 pumps.

Q: What kinds of equipment can be monitored?
A: Turbo Suite monitors gas turbines (single, two and three-shaft), axial and centrifugal compressors, steam turbines and centrifugal pumps. Turbo Suite supports turbo machinery from any manufacturer.
