Wireless technology has been credited with helping conserve energy, cut costs and increase productivity. However, process control industries, which are among the world’s biggest energy users, have been slower to adopt wireless solutions. Motivated by the goals of helping U.S. industry become familiar with wireless capabilities and conserve more energy, Honeywell helped establish the Wireless Industrial Networking Alliance (WINA) in 2002. This coalition of industrial end-user companies, technology suppliers, industry organizations, software developers and system integrators is devoted to accelerating the industrial world’s adoption of wireless technologies.

WINA attributes the industrial world’s reluctance to use wireless solutions in large part to the prevalence of unclear and biased information about wireless technologies. To solve this problem, WINA acts as an objective resource for end users. The organization educates process control industries about the benefits and availability of wireless applications by providing user-friendly information materials and forming industry partnerships to sponsor Web-based project demonstrations.

WINA offers additional support to process control industries by sponsoring plant demonstrations of wireless technologies, influencing and supporting applicable standards and certifying systems in specific applications.
